What’s Fideliphone?

The name Fideliphone is a combination of the words fidelity and telephone. These words accurately describe what Fideliphone is and does.

The word telephone is familiar to virtually every man, woman, and child in the developed world.  Since the term was coined in the 1820’s, the word has come to mean “an apparatus, system, or process for transmission of sound or speech to a distant point, especially by an electric device.”

Telephones have been a household appliance for most of us since the early 20th century, and even then the idea of using telephone lines to transmit high quality audio from one point to another was proposed and used to create the first radio networks.

In the mid 1990’s, it became feasible to transmit audio over the Internet, and many individuals and groups popped up to turn that into it’s own industry.  As the Internet audio industry has matured, many Internet broadcasters and podcasters have used technology originally designed for the broadcast industry, but others have experimented with using voice-over-ip applications such as Skype to produce almost professional sounding content.  Still, the ability to join two or more small studios together over the Internet has largely been limited to those who could afford to spend hundreds of dollars on highly specialized software.

Fideliphone takes the place of software packages costing hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars to set up perminant or temporary audio links among any number of Internet-connected locations.

The concept of fidelity may be somewhat less familiar.  The 2006 Random House Dictionary defines fidelity as “the degree of accuracy with which sound or images are recorded or reproduced.”  Fideliphone transmits sound over the Internet with extremely high fidelity.  The audio quality is suitable for transmitting both speech and music at near CD quality.

Fidelity is also defined as “strict observance of promises, duties, etc.”
The mission of the fideliphone development team is to produce the most stable and useable software in the industry.  We take this promise very seriously, and depend on your feedback to know how best to fulfill this promise.
